District Authorities Empowered

The O’Neill-Dion Government has been embarking on delivering services to district and local level governments.

Recently, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill announced that district managers will be given the hire and fire power if public servants do not perform their responsibilities.

Mr O’Neill says this is to closely monitor the administrative mechanism of service delivery to people in districts.

The Prime Minister said, all provincial governments will be scaled down and public servant will be pushed out to districts and local level governments to work closely with the people.

Mr O’Neill said the government wants services to reach the people at village levels. This will prove to the people that the government is concerned, to improve and deliver services on time.

He also announced that the national government will build 10 houses in the 89 districts starting this year for the next 4 years. This is to house public servants and make them work closely with people at the village level.

Mr O’Neill said the housing is a condition to attract public servants whom most face difficulties in finding proper and better accommodation in most centres throughout PNG.
