Distribution of Alcohol to be Monitored in Jiwaka

by Michelle Amba – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Jiwaka Provincial Government’s business arm, the Jiwaka Development Corporation, will be the sole distributor of alcohol in Jiwaka Province.

Jiwaka Governor, Dr. William Tongamp, said “we are trying to control and monitor the distribution and consumption of alcohol in the province.”

He said the provincial government is holding talks with the main manufacturer of alcohol, SP Brewery, to ensure that this is implemented throughout the province.

Jiwaka Development Corporation will have its distribution port in Kurumul, the provincial headquarters.

Governor Tongamp said all distributors in operation will have their licenses revoked.

He said this not only to make money but to monitor the amount of alcohol consumed in a given time frame.

Jiwaka used to operate under Western Highlands Liquor Licensing board, however this caused problems for police who were in turn unable to control the number of licensed operators in the province.
