Disaster Funding for Wapenamanda and Manam Island

Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion today presented K1.5 million as disaster relief funding for Wapenamanda District in Enga and Madang Province.

He presentedthe money tothe respective MP’s Rimbink Pato who is alsothe Minister for Foreign Affairs and Jim Kas,the Madang Governor.

The funding is part of K2.8 million disbursed bythe Deputy Prime Ministers#39; Office to several disaster affected areas inthe country.

The presentation of funds was made in a small ceremony held atthe National Disaster Centre in Port Moresby. It was withnessed by Director Martin Mose, and NDC staff.

Before presenting cheques to both MP’s, The Deputy Prime Ministersaidthe effects of climate change has increased natural disasters inthe country. He saidthe key to disaster reduction is preparedness and mitigation, and response was only a temporary measure.

The K1.5 million presented today is part of K2.8 million allocated for disaster relief in several parts ofthe country.

Beth Wapenamanda MP, Rimbink Pato, and Madang Governor, Jim Kas, were present to receivetheir cheques.

K1 million will go towards flood and landslide affected areas in Wapenamanda while, K500, 000 goes towardsthe up-keep ofthe displaced Manam Islanders.

The Deputy Prime Minister assured ther provinces that have submitted requests for disaster relief funding that money will be released once all submissions are processed.
