Disaster Awareness in Rabaul District

by Edwin Fidelis – EM TV News, Rabaul

The Rabaul District Administration, in East New Britain, has taken on the responsibility of carrying out disaster awareness in schools and hospitals, throughout the district.

This is to prepare them for emergencies, should there be any occurrences of disasters in the area.

The district has taken the move after realising that East New Britain Province lacks a proper disaster emergency plan for volcano and tsunami prone areas.

The Rabaul District Authority says, the province needs a proper disaster plan to prepare its people for any big disasters. East New Britain is a disaster prone area with active volcanoes and regular earthquakes, with the latest recording up to 7.5 on the richter scale.

Through the awareness received, locals will be better equipped with knowledge on how to help themselves, in times of disasters.
