Daru Hospital Crisis Leaves One Dead

Community Leaders from Daru are calling on Western Province Governor Ati Wabiro, Health Minister, Michael Malabag, Health Secretary Pascou Kase and Police Commander Simon Kauba, to quickly come to Daru and resolve the ongoing crisis between the courts reinstated Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Doctor Amos Lano and acting CEO, Sister Mary Joseph.

The crisis has so far claimed the life of a patient, and seriously injured another. According to Dr. Lano, he said he is the legitimate CEO after the courts reinstated him in June last year, after being suspended by Health Minister, Michael Malabag for standing by the Hospital board over issues of outstanding allowances.

He said on Tuesday he was on his way to resume his duties at the hospital when the acting CEO saw him and started calling out to all staffs to leave the hospital leaving patients unattended to. This resulted in the death of the patient.

He said he will file contempt of court charges to the acting CEO and the current hospital board, which he said was formed illegally.

He called on the police and the people of Daru to respect the court’s decision and not to take sides.
