CSOs call for Prioritising Forest Communities

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have expressed their concerns regarding government’s focus on embracing sustainable development here in PNG.

CSO representatives say that while sustainable development is being positively embraced, forest communities must also be the focus of any discussions that take place.

Many have expressed that forest communities are always left out while millions and billions of Kina are gained from their land.

“Our forest people have been neglected over the years when there is a project or development taking place in forest communities,” Peter Bossip said.

Many want the government to take this into consideration if they are serious about the sustainability of projects and the provision of better services to people living in rural forest areas.

They believe sustainable development will only be achieved if there is more collaboration and better dialogue between the forest communities, government, developers and CSOs.

They expressed these thoughts following the announcement of the 2015 National CSO Seminar and Exhibition this Friday.

The Exhibition and Seminar will be held at the University of Papua New Guinea’s Forum Square, with the theme – Supporting a Holistic Approach towards Responsible Sustainable Development in PNG.
