The crowd at the final day of the 2016 Morobe Show were more rowdy than the past days’ showgoers.
Sticks, stones and containers were hurled in missile-style attacks onto stall roofs from outside the main entrance. This behaviour has become a tradition for the closing day of the show.
With many genuine showgoers being children and families, this was a cause for security concern.
Defence force personnel were at the gates ensuring orderly flow of people. Until the mid-afternoon commotion, the soldiers were collecting contraband such as knives, scissors, and screwdrivers throughout the day.
Visitor numbers have fallen compared to past show attendance. Most of the visitors travel in from the Highlands region.
