Crackdown on Foreign-operated Shops Along Highway

By Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

The number of foreign-operated Shops along the Hiritano Highway is increasing.

While Police investigations have discovered that some of these shops are operating illegally, locals are saying the shops are here to stay and provide them the much needed goods and services.

In Taure-Lakakam LLG, Malalauwa District in East Kerema Gulf Province, a Chinese operated shop that operates under the name ‘Giteng-Investment’ is serving over 8,000 people.

However, the shop was built less than three meters away from the highway which is against the laws on roads and developments.

While locals are saying the shop gives them the service they need, the police are concerned whether the foreign workers operating the shop have proper work permits.

Investigators from the Organised Crimes Unit (OCU) have confirmed that there are individuals who are working in these shops, under a single workers permit.

The allegations will be confirmed once a final report is presented to the police from the Labor Department, where it is believed arrests will be made.
