Cows to Strengthen Relationship With Disciplinary Forces

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

The NCD Metropolitan Command is proposing a better working relationship with members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and the Correctional Service for 2015.

Three cows were presented to the two disciplinary forces yesterday to further strengthen their relationship with police.

It came as a surprise, first for the Correctional Service, and later the Defence Force.

At Bomana, one cow was presented to families of the Correctional Service personnel, and another was given for the inmates.

Bomana Jail Commanding Officer Kiddy Keko, when receiving the cows, said the NCD Command’s gesture has created a whole new relationship level for the disciplinary forces.

The idea of presenting cows to both arms of the disciplinary forces is the first of its kind and history in the making.

It aims to solidify their relationship at a more personal level.

With the 2015 Pacific Games nearing, NCD Metropolitan Police Superintendent Andy Bawa wants to see a closer working relationship with members of PNGDF and the Correctional Service.

He also made reference to the standoff in 2014 between PNGDF and police, saying that what has happened was a result of ill-discipline, and assured citizens that all three forces will be conducting joint operations to provide security for citizens during major events like the July Pacific Games and the nation’s 40th anniversary in September.

In response, Colonel Francis Kari accepted the cow and thanked the NCD Command, saying the PNGDF will be executing tough disciplinary actions on ill-behaved soldiers this year, and stands ready to assist police with manpower.

Leaders of the three forces in Port Moresby have joined hands to work in partnership and are now challenging their counterparts in other provinces to also work in union.
