Copra Price Drop

The drop in the copra price last year has affected many farmers in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Majority of the people depend on copra for income.

Steady prices and stabilization funds are their plea to the Government to cater for the drop.

Copra is one of Bougainville’s leading cash crops, which many families have depended on for sustainability.

Whenever the copra price drops, the farmers suffer.

Since the price has dropped, the farmers have lost interest working on the plantations.

Madonna Bita is one of the mothers who depends on copra for an income.

She says copra apart from cocoa, is the only means to livelihood, especially in the North Bougainville area.

A call has been made to the National and Autonomous Bougainville Governments to subsidize the copra price so that farmers will not be affected.
