Christmas Police Operations

Lae Police Boss, Ivan Lakanti, saysthe on-going crime problem facing Lae City isthe result of communities not assisting police.

Lakatani says withthe festive season already underway, his officers will need more support fromthe community.

Ivan Lakatani says Christmas operations have begun since last Monday. Foot patrols around major areas ofthe city including top town are amongst tactics to curb out problems duringthe Christmas period.

“There will be foot patrols and motorized patrols particularly those tothe Bemayong area,” he said.

He says that community and juvenile policing manpower will have two days atthe office for reports, becausethe aim now is to work with communities in Lae. “Ifthe communities don’t playtheir partthenthere is one part missing,” he said.

The Community Policing and Juvenile section are both key departments inthe service to address lawlessness caused by homebrew and homemade firearms.

This is also one ofthe first operations for the AFP’s. SuperintendentoTim Dahlstrom, says his men will be at hand to assist Lakatani andthe Lae Police Service. “We are here to assistthem and help wherethey ask us to helpthem,” he said.

The Police Service is again weary ofthe festive celebrations, known to have caused serious social problems inthe past.

Annual festive occasions, call for Lae Police to plan and take precautions for safe guarding communities aroundthe City during celebrations.
