Christmas Eve accident along Magi Highway

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

One man is seriously injured while seven others are nursing minor injuries at the Port Moresby General Hospital, after they were hit by a PMV last night.

The accident happened around 10pm between Gaire village and Ginigoada along the Magi Highway in Central province.

At 9pm, it was announced on police radio that two PMVs had collided along the Magi Highway.

Acting on sketchy information, the Police Unit I drove to the Six Mile roundabout and waited for the ambulance that had gone to the scene of the accident.

The injured eight were rushed to the hospital and EMTV News followed closely behind.

Hospital protocols had prevented EMTV News from filming within the Accident and Emergency Ward or getting an on camera interview with the witness.

But it is understood, the eight were parked on the side of the road when they were hit by a vehicle which was travelling to Kwikila in the Central province.

From the seven injured, six were men and one a woman. Doctors at the arrival bay at the General Hospital had confirmed that two male passengers had broken their legs.

Meanwhile, the normal police operations were carried out through the night.

The Badili team set up road blocks at the Badili Service Station while the Boroko team set up theirs at the Four Mile roundabout.

No other major incident was reported as of 11 O’clock last night. But such operations will continue tonight and over the weekend.
