Children With Special Needs Locked Out

By Sylvester Gawi – EM TV, Lae

Children with special needs attending the Morobe Special Education Resource Centre were locked out of their classrooms this morning, causing frustrations among parents and staff.

Speaking to EM TV, many parents expressed disappointment of not being informed about the classrooms being locked.

However, the school’s administration claimed that “they are only getting rid of an elementary school operating within the resource centre.”

The Morobe Special Education Resource Centre is one facility that caters for children with disabilities, from all over Lae city.

The centre provides children with special needs the opportunity to learn basic methods of reading, writing and communication, with other students in school.

But what that has became a frustration for parents, is the classrooms being locked without any form of notice from the school authority.

Many parents have also called for the provincial government’s intervention to establish more learning facilities for disable children in Morobe.

They don’t want their disabled children to be enrolled at mainstream schools, which they wont be given special attention on how they learn.

They say the resource centre’s incentive learning program allows special needs children to learn and communicate with other children and prepare them for mainstream schools.

Meanwhile, the school board’s chairman told EM TV this afternoon that parents should not be intimidated by the teaching staff as the school is subject to directives from the education board.

He also assured parents that their children would resume learning as soon as teachers’ issues are sorted out.
