Catholic Church condemns same sex marriage

By Adelaide Kari – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Father Victor Roche, General Secretary of Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, has made it clear where the PNG church stands on same sex marriage after some confusion.

He made this statement after social and print media made it seem his comments during a press conference on 7 August, where he said that “PNG would not accept same sex marriage”.

Misunderstandings arose that he meant the Catholic Church was in favour of same sex marriage.

He said the church understands other countries have passed same sex marriage bills in their governments already, but PNG would most likely not due to PNG’s culture.

He went on to say that the church is compassionate to gays and lesbians as God is compassionate to them, because they are human.

He made mention the teaching of the Catholic Church is constant: Catholic Church is against same sex marriage.
