A delegation from Bougainville, is attending the Our Media conference in Goroka to draw local media attention to the plight of the world’s first climate refugees.

Ursula Rakova, who heads Tulele Peisa, a Bougainville NGO, says while there has been a lot of international media attention, local media has lagged behind in acquiring firsthand information.

Images like these have become common on various blogs and websites. But not much of the content has been generated by Papua New Guinean media.

A Bougainvillean delegation that is in Goroka for the Our Media conference says they would like to see more Papua New Guinean content about the impacts of climate change on the Catarets.

Ursula Rakova, the executive director of Tulele Peisa, a Bougainvillean NGO is seeking assistance at this conference, in terms of networking with community media practitioners in the country.

She wants to see better documentation of the impacts of climate change with a local perspective.

While much of the international attention has been on Bougainville, islands communities all over the country are facing similar challenges.

In Madang, government attention to climate change effects has been very limited.

The Our media conference hosted by the University of Goroka, has brought media practitioners from all over the world.

They’ve come with various views and experiences about community media initiatives.

The conference is also shedding light on important issues like gender based violence, sorcery killings and of course climate change.

By Friday, participants will have gathered volumes of information, whether that information will be put to good use remains to be seen.
