Call For An Urgent Climate Action

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Director General, Jose Graziano da Silva, at the ministerial meeting on food security and climate adaptation in Small Island Developing States, has called on for an urgent action to climate changes as they were key to food security for many smaller islands.

While stressing more on the effects and threats affecting Small Island Developing States, Graziano da Silva said it is important that these islands be assisted, as most of them are heavily dependent on tourism, fisheries and agriculture.

Director Graziano da Silva said political commitment and partnership is important, as it will help these affected islands mitigate climate change while support their growth, food security and stable livelihoods.

Calling 2015 a crucial year for global responses to sustainable development and climate change, food security lies at the heart of these agendas and urgent action should be taken to help the affected island nations.

FAO through its Global Blue Growth Initiative is assisting Small Island Developing States to sustainably use their aquatic resources and help them mitigate these challenging climate effects.

Calls have been made for an urgent action be taken on the climate change threats and help save the smaller islands affected by these issues.
