In 2013, concerned with the lack of accessibility and affordability of owning a home, the government set up the Ministerial Committee for Affordable Land and Housing, with the Department of National Planning as the coordinating agency and Minister for this department, Charles Able, as the Chairman.
In 2007 the government in partnership with Bank South Pacific rolled out the ‘First Home Ownership Scheme’ whereby BSP rigorously screens applicants approving a land title making them eligible for a loan to build their first home.
