Business Opportunities in PNG’s Energy Sector

There are many business opportunities available in PNG rsquo;s Energy Sector, asthe country’s drive to provide efficient and reliable electricity continues.

 

This was highlighted duringthPNG Advantage 2013Investment Summit in Port Moresby on Tuesday.

Representttatives fromthe Government and Private sectors sharedtheir views ofthe opportunities available.

 

Minister for Public Enterprises and StateInvestmentoBen Micah, toldthe Summit thatthe proposed Purari River hydro power project is very important forPNG

 

“This is a project that we want to target asthe providers of cheap, reliable, and long term sustainable power,” said Micah.

“We believe it will give no excuse tothe government and to investors to use this available cheap and large quantity of power to downstream process a lot ofthe nation’s raw material on shore in this country,” he said.
 

PNG Power CEO, John Tangit’sain PNG Power invited independent power producers to enterthe energy market to enable reliable electricity inthe country.

 

“PNG Power has embarked onthe process of contracting independent power producers to provide private generating facilities to augment its existing generation infrastructure,” said Tangit.
 

Funding agencies such astheInternational Finance Corporation andthe Asian Development Bank also expressed concern in assisting to develop infrastructure inthe Energy Sector in PNG based ontheir experiences from past projects in ther countries.

 

The two-day Summit atthe Gateway Hotel ended yesterday, with participants being provided with vast business opportunities in PNG to utilise intothe future.
