Buka Fatalities

By Fabian Hakalits – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Bougainville police reported two deaths on Christmas eve.

These deaths resulted from a fallen tree branch which fell off a tree at Ieta Village in Buka, killing a youth and a child.

The youth was instantly killed while the child died at the Buka Hospital.

Senior Sergeant Earmart Tsimes has called on the people of Bougainville to take precautions and be trouble free.

“Respect must prevail because if there is no respect, it can create disunity in our communities,”

“Christmas was a time of family reunion and should also be a time of reflection,” he said.

Sergeant Tsimes also called on the people of Bougainville not to create fear or harass other citizens, but allow freedom of movement to continue, so that the people are able to move around during the festive season.

Meanwhile, police in Buin have ruled out arson from a Grade Ten Double Dormitory at the Buin Secondary School which burnt to ashes on Thursday.

South Bougainville Police Commander, Senior Sergent John Popui said the fire was the result of an electrical fault.

“At the time of the fire, 10 students were residing in the building but could not do anything.”

According to investigations, dorm occupants have been ripping wires to make illegal extensions, resulting in short circuiting a cable which triggered the fire.
