Buimo Perimeter Fence Still Needed

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, said logistics and infrastructure remain a concern for Buimo Prison.

The reaction comes after the suspended Buimo Prison Acting Commander, Superintendent Judy Tara, called on Lae authorities to install a perimeter fence.

Superintendent Tara was suspended at the time of the call, when 87 prisoners escaped from Lae’s Buimo Jail on February 25 this year, resulting in 12 prisoners being killed.

68 were remandees and the other 19 were convicted prisoners.

The perimeter fence was a priority highlighted in previous reports, as well as in an investigation that happened after the mass prison escape this year.

On Friday, Governor Naru said no specific request was given for a perimeter fence and that the Lae District was also working to get funding.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Correctional Service, Michael Waipo, says the provincial government said they would assist in funding the perimeter fence, but nothing has been done as yet.
