Bridges Damaged by Floods in West New Britain

by Edwin Fidelis – EM TV News, Kokopo

In West New Britain Province, a series of floods have washed away at least two bridges along the Bialla-Kimbe highway.

The Ivule Bridge has been completely washed away, last Friday, while Tiauru Bridge is on the verge of collapsing.

This follows continuous rains in West New Britain last Thursday.

Businesses and commuters have come to a halt along this section of the highway.

West New Britain governor, Sansindran Muthuvel, has since raised concerns over the bridges, which continue to deteriorate even after it was inspected by the Works Minister, Francis Awesa last year.

The cost of the damages hasn’t been disclosed yet but it’s understood the provincial works team are assessing the damages.

A temporary bypass has been made yesterday allowing traffic to resume between Bialla and Kimbe town.

Maintenance work is expected to begin when the rain and flood fully subsided.
