Border Trade To Have New Policy

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

There will be a new policy to monitor the trade of goods at the Batas shopping centre at Wutung border post, in West Sepik Province.

Customs Chief Commissioner, Ray Paul, said the Policy will address prolong problems for customs as there is no control of goods both legal and illegal that is coming in from Indonesia.

The Batas shopping centre has been providing the people of Vanimo much needed goods and services for the last decade.

However, the trend of smuggling illegal goods is also a rising problem in Batas.

Commissioner Paul said there are plans to cut down on this trend and a policy will be in place to monitor the flow of goods from the border.

The proximity of the Batas shopping centre and Vanimo town allows a large number of people to travel to Batas during trading days.

PNG customs will monitor the number of people crossing the border and number of goods they buy.

The policy will come in effect once the new border processing facility is opened in Wutung, West Sepik Province.
