Environment and Conservation Department is now putting a total ban on plastic bags in the country. Minister responsible John Pundari says a study has seen micro parts of plastics in food sources and other environmental impacts.
Minister Pundari says importers and makers of plastic bags are given a month to discuss with the department for any queries. The announcement of the ban follows a study carried out by the Department on bio-degradable bags. Reports revealed a significant impact plastics cause on the environment includes food sources. Papua New Guinea imports nearly 460,000 kilograms of plastic bags very year. This is on record and assessed by authorities, however other plastic bags are illegally entering the country. Businesses manufacturing plastic bags in the country and those importing have been urged to see the Department for any queries.
