Avira Still President of PNG Boxing Union

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The Annual General meeting for the PNG Boxing Union was held over the weekend in Kavieng, New Ireland Province, coinciding with the national championship finals.

The meeting was held elect new executives for the Union.

New Mekeo were crowned the champions of last week’s successful National Boxing Championships in Kavieng.

John Avira was returned as the PNG Boxing Union President. There were also other big announcements to improve funding assistance for the sport.

The sport has enjoyed great success this year with eight gold medals out of 13 on offer at July’s Pacific Games, followed by Thadius Katua’s gold medal performance at the Youth Commonwealth Games.

The government knows the huge potential that sports can play in promoting the country on the world stage with the Pacific Games, and the success of rugby league through the PNG Hunters in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup being two examples of this.

The government will help in a similar way for boxing, which has great potential, to put PNG on the world map.
