ATS Volleyball Tournament

While most communities over the week were quiet and preparing for the New Year to arrive, the ORO community of ATS, were hosting the finals of their first ever community volleyball tournament.

The event was sponsored by member for North East, Hon. Labi Amaiu. Youths from the suburb battled it out in the burning Port Moresby sun as they played for the Labi Amaiu Cup.

The ATS volley ball tournament began on the 22nd of December and continued through the festive season to New Year’s eve. The games ended with the grand final yesterday.

Competing for the Abi Amaiu Cup were Apore mens and womens teams, and Noko men’s and women’s teams. The four teams played for top honors as they battled it out in the sun at Oro village.

To kick off the finals, the Apore mens team played agaist Noko men. The two teams battled for top honor as they tried to use their game strategies.

Apore dispatched Noko after winning 3 sets. Meanwhile Noko women played against Apore women but it was Apore that shared strong momentum with their mens team to win the match against Noko.

The finals ended on a good note, followed by presentation of cash and trophy.   With great support from friends and family, there were smiles and laughter as the presentation started with supporters dancing and cheering for their teams as they walked to receive their price.

But it was the team that called themselves Bester in yellow that stole the show in winning the Abi Amaiu Cup.

Tournament organizer Rosemary Ikari said that the games were designed to bring the community together and create a more friendly relationship among residents and to keep youths off the streets. She also mentioned that with the help from the community she is will to make the tournament an yearly event.
