Andrews Condemns Attack on Jiwaka PPC

by Michelle Amba – EM TV, Port Moresby

Acting Police Commissioner, Jim Andrews, has condemned the attack on two senior police officers in the Highlands.

Highlands Deputy Divisional Commander, Jimmy Onopia and Jiwaka Provincial Police Commander, Joseph Tondop were attacked in Jiwaka on Tuesday.

They went to receive a petition from the relatives of a man alleged to have been killed by police in Banz. However, when police arrived the villagers attacked, injuring two police officers and damaging police vehicles.

The Acting Commissioner is giving leaders in Jiwaka until the end of this week to identify the attackers and bring them to police.

“For the information of the public, especially the people of Jiwaka, we sent three police investigators from Port Moresby to Jiwaka and since then we have arrested and charged four policemen and a civilian for the death of the man in police custody,” said Andrews.

He said the attack on Tondop is unwarranted and the assailants must be apprehended and charged.

He is calling for full cooperation from leaders in the province.
