A supermarket operator in Port Moresby has embracedthe American independence celebrations this month by introducing American food products to its customers.
Beroko FoodWorld and Waterfront FoodWorld – Harbour City, operated by Garamut Enterprise, have dedicated an aisle to this cause.
American Ambassador, Walter North was atthe waterfront to officially openthe American Aisle.
The cutting ofthe ribbon tothe American Aisle, a small occasion, but with greater significance in commemoration of America’s 237thIndependence celebrations onthe 4th of July.
With demand for American products increasing Garamut Enterprise through its supermarkets has greatly increasedthe number of products – an initiative greatly welcomed by Ambassador North.
“I really commendthe team for recognising that US in competitive, cost wise, and its got a quality product that can meetthe needs ofthe local people,” says Ambassador North.
There’s optimism fromthe United States thatthe availability of American products throughoutthe country will continue to increase as a result ofthe recently launched “US-PNG bilateral trade talks.
The first ever trade dialogue was introduced onthe last day of May; a first step towards enhancing trade between both countries.
Issues being deliberated on include: sanitary and phytosanitary regulations, customs procedures, trade preferences underthe Generalised System of Preferences; and intellectual property rights.
Coffee is currently America’s number 1 exported product from Papua New Guineaand if trade discussions go well, opportunities will open for ther agricultural products.
Meanwhile,the American products inthe two supermarkets will be on display for the whole month of July. For a startoit’s just food products. Andthe extension of this exercise will depend on customer demand.
