ABG Reviews Business Registration

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Port Moresby

The recent outbreak of violence in Buka Town where locals attacked and ransacked a business house has prompted the Autonomous Bougainville Government to review the reserve list of the types of businesses that are permitted to operate in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

This is the direction from President, Chief John Momis.

Before that, President Momis congratulated the Bougainville Police Service’s response to the recent incident in Buka noting this as a sign of how the rule of law has matured in Bougainville.

Following these, the Autonomous Bougainville Government will further build:

• The introduction of a rapid response team capable of responding to similar situations that may arise in all areas of Bougainville.
• Boosting police manpower , and running further bridging training programs for prospective Bougainvillean trainees; and
• Introducing a Bougainville Security Council.

Until this review has been conducted, a temporary ban has been enforced on the registration of new businesses.

With the referendum drawing closer, President Momis says, Bougainvilleans must acknowledge the past is behind them and their future lies in an orderly, peace loving and respecting society.

Momis said foreign investment must be welcomed as means to secure Bougainville’s economic prosperity.
