The Popondetta Touch Association competition, after a year of wonderful touch football, finished on a high note recently with the Independence Super 5s tournament.
Jail Birds took home the title in the men’s open division, and a new level of excitement surrounding touch footy has certainly descended upon the province.
In what has become a regular weekend fixture for many public servants and prominent figures from the area aged 40 years and over, a Masters competition has also commenced.
The get together takes place most weekends at Dorain’s Park each Sunday. It attracts families and plenty of spectators.
Seeing some of the older guys running around and calling for a substitution after just a few minutes on the field also makes for a bit of a laugh.
The initiative, run by Popondetta Touch Association executives has now caught the eye of local businesses and NGOs in the province that are looking to jump on board as sponsors.
Not only does it help in keeping participants fit and healthy, it also provides a fantastic social utlet for many of the older men within the area.
The program has been named ‘Getting Older and Fitter in Touch Footy’.
