The volcanic town of Rabaul in the East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea is gearing up for at least three days of festivity that will start on the country’s independence eve, September 15.
The Frangipani Festival will include the joint celebration of PNG’s 41st Independence and the 22nd anniversary of the twin volcanic eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan.
The Festival will include the Kinavai dances, canoe race, and vehicle float around Rabaul town.
The festival is a community event and has over the years been made a success through community participation.
A representative from the organising committee, Susie McGrade, says the event would not be made possible without the generosity of business houses in Rabaul town, some of whom have rebuilt from the ashes since the twin eruption in 1994.
The event is one of the biggest in East New Britain province, and is expected to attract people from all over East New Britain.
