Angau Patient Appeals for New Hospital Equipment

A patient at Lae’s Angau General Hospital is making a special appeal to donor agencies, both national and international, to assist the hospital with purchasing new equipment.

Ruth Sogori says she has seen that the Angau Hospital is the best in the country. However, it lacks the vital equipment that it needs to assist its medical practitioners in doing their job effectively.

Sogori was admitted to Angau four weeks ago to undergo an operation. During the time she spent at the hospital she observed that doctors and nurses at the hospital are willing to help their patients, but are not able to do so without the proper equipment.

Three weeks ago, nine women who were admitted in the same ward as her were to undergo operations. However, the doctor had to cancel the operation and discharge them as the air conditioning unit in the operating theatre was not working.

Angau General Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Christopher Kenyhercz, said there are problems with the cooling room due to lapses in maintenance over the years.

They are now working to fix the problem.

Sogori is calling on the business community in Lae, stakeholders, NGOs, the government and donor agencies to assist the hospital.

She believes with the availability of the correct equipment, doctors and nurses can be able to better assist their patients.

Dr. Kenyhercz said hospital management will discipline any medical practitioners if the management finds any evidence of failure on the part of its medical officers.

The CEO welcomes donor agencies who are willing to donate new equipment to the hospital but said the hospital will not accept second-hand equipment from other hospitals.

He said that at present, 90 per cent of the materials coming from outside agencies are not useable.
