Netball’s New Stars

After recent international victories over Singapore by our Under 21 side, and visits by top Australian teams to Papua New Guinea, the country’s up and coming stars of the game look to have a good future.

The PNG Netball Federation is currently in discussions for a proposed national league, and this bodes as a good sign for a sport that is growing year by year.

PNG Pepes coach Unaisi Rokoura expressed delight at the concept and said that this would no doubt raise the quality of competition in the country.

While the proposal has yet to be finalised it is understood that the cream of the country’s players will be placed in franchise clubs nationally and compete against each other.

With the PNG under 21 side performing well against a visiting Singapore junior team last week, this proposal will see a gradual pathway from the youth division straight through to the top, and pit young, up and coming netballers against seasoned veterans.

That gives hope to other players in divisions down the line, through PNG netball’s large playing system.

This weekend will see the finals of the Port Moresby Netball Association competition. Rita Flynn again playing host, and a number of these stars and future stars will be on show.
