Mogish: More Police Presence Needed at Kwikila Station

By Theckla Gunga – EMTV News, Port Moresby

National Court Judge, Justice Panuel Mogish, says there is a need for more police involvement in central court circuits.

His comments stem from the poor turnout in police numbers based at the Kwikila station, during the three week court circuit in the area.

Justice Mogish made these remarks at the conclusion of the circuit, on Friday.

Police personnel are responsible to ensure suspects are arrested and handed over to Correctional Services officers.

A closer look at why only a few police officers attend the court forum revealed that Kwikila police are facing internal administrative issues.

The officers encounter transportation challenges when trying to track down suspects or conduct police patrols.

It is understood the Kwikila police station commander still lives at the Bomana Police Training College, because another officer is living in the house allocated for him at Kwikila.

Court Circuits are conducted for judges to hear National Court cases in the districts.

It involves the Judicial and Correctional Services, the Public Solicitor, the Public Prosecutor and the police.

However, in the recent Central court forum, senior police officers based at Kwikila did not turn up to participate in the discussions.

This then promoted Justice Mogish to raise concerns on the lack of support from Kwikila police and the Central Provincial Administration towards the forum.
