PORT MORESBY, July 8 – Powerlifting is one of the strength events that will be contested at the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games.

Along with strength, powerlifting is a show of concentration and power.

Powerlifting evolved from a sport called ‘odd-lifts’ where competitors followed the same three-attempt format, but had many more events to compete in. It was similar to a strongman competition.

Powerlifters will compete in three different disciplines; squat, bench press and deadlift.

The disciplines are designed to measure different aspects of human strength.

Athletes will get at least three attempts at each discipline and the winner will be determined by the highest weight total of the best lift in each discipline.

Women compete in seven weight categories ranging from -47kg to more than +84kg.

Men compete in eight weight categories from -59kg to +120kgs.

At Noumea 2011, Papua New Guinea topped the powerlifting medal table with six gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

The two days of powerlifting competition, which became part of the Games programme at Papeete 1995 in New Caledonia will take place at the PNG Power Dome from Thursday July 9.
