The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games will be hosted by the coastal city of Durban, in eastern South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Durban will be the first African city to host the games, where athletes from more than 50 countries, most of whom are former colonies of Britain, gather to compete in an international, multi-sport event.
The announcement was made at the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in Auckland, New Zealand.
With infrastructure already in place, the 2022 Commonwealth Games will begin on July 18 marking what would have been the 104th birthday of former South African President, Nelson Mandela. The games will end on July 30.
The next Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast, Australia in 2018.
According to the BBC, outgoing President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Prince Tunku Imran, expressed the federation’s support for hosting the games for the first time in Africa.
