The Climate Division of Vanuatu’s Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department has warned that the country should expect cyclones in the coming months.
The cyclone season is expected from November this year to April, 2016.
Manager of the Climate Division, Philip Malsale, said that around two to six cyclones were being predicted for Vanuatu.
He urged people to be watchful of weather warning issued by authorities and be attentive to the national disaster management office.
Parts of Vanuatu are currently experiencing drought as a result of the prolonged dry season, like Papua New Guinea and other Pacific nations.
The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazard Department (VMGD) has appealed to people to prepare for the cyclone season. According to the Director of VMGD, David Gibson, the current El Niño combined with the cyclones could have adverse effects of the country.
Vanuatu is located in the hotspot of tropical cyclone activity in the region. Each year Vanuatu and New Caledonia experience the greatest cyclone activity with at least 2-3 cyclones passing close to the countries.
