by Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

All Papua New Guineans are required to have a National Identification (NID) card.

The rollout of the NID card system is compulsory and people who refuse to be registered will have difficulties accessing banking and government services.

National Planning Minister, Charles Abel said with the 2016 National Budget allocation, every employee in government departments must be registered and have a national ID as a requirement.

Minister Abel said this will qualify government employees to be on payroll.

The system will also prevent ghost names on the payroll.

In future, few months from now, the NID card will be compulsory in every financial institution to access banking services.

BSP said IDs are an essential requirement when opening an account therefore, they will require everyone to produce an NID card instead of driver’s license or similar.

The projects was initiated by the national government and rolled out last year.

So far only one per cent of the country’s population have registered.
