Concerns of Disaster Funds Misuse and Abuse

by Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Two locals in the Ialibu-Pangia district of Southern Highlands have raised concerns of relief funds not reaching people.

They claim third party workers are diverting funds while pretending to deliver relief supplies to affected communities.

They believe the middle-man as the service provider gets a huge cut and the affected people receive little.

“We want funds released and go straight to district and LLG’s and not middle man or service providers, they usually benefit in most funding and affected people receive little,” said Nelson Weaina.

Mr Weaina said proper procedures must be followed to see people benefit from government funding and relief supplies.

Their concerns come as the government released K5 million for disaster affected provinces.

Meanwhile the Inter-Agency technical Assessment Teams have been dispatched to the four regions of the country to gather comprehensive assessment of the El Nino in the country.
