One of the best ways to achieve stronger communities, societies and economies, is to empower women and girls.

This was expressed by the Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Margaret Adamson in her keynote address this morning, to hundreds of women professionals who gathered at the 6th Annual International Women’s Day Breakfast.

The event was hosted by the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW) of PNG.

Ms Adamson said gender equality in combating violence are not just matters of aid and support, but are actually highly political and existential issues in today’s global society.

BPW PNG President, Ms Susil Nelson-Kongoi, who welcomed the house, said International Women’s Day is the most significant day for women across the world.

The day reflects on the roles and status of women in society, and raises awareness on how much has been achieved, and still to be achieved through equality.

BPW PNG boasts over 55 professional business women members, who are committed to empowering Papua New Guinean women through education.

The International Women’s Day breakfast is the club’s major annual fundraiser. In 2014, BPW PNG raised over K180,000 which was used to assist 264 scholarships to Papua New Guinean women and girls.

Those who attended the refined event include numerous dedicated business house sponsors, and prominent women figures, including Deputy High Commissioner for PNG Margaret Adamson, the Prime Minister’s wife, Lynda Babao, Justice Catherine Davani, and sporting greats Dika Toua, Karo Kelai and Julienne Maliaki.
