The Ipi Park played host to razzle dazzle footy action when Hekari Tarangau took on Gigira Laitepo Souths in the A division of the Port Moresby Rugby League Competition over the weekend.
Last year’s grand finalist team, Tarangau, formed a resilient pack against PRL’s coveted side who remain favorites after defeating the Hanuabada Hawks in round 10.
A minute of silence was given in respect to former Kumul and administrator, the late Iffysoe Segeyaro, who was loyal to the development of the school boys’ rugby league program, and late Rodney Onguglo, the Tarangau women’s team coach.
Hekari Tarangaus, in maroon with last year’s grand finalist tag on hand, proved to be a strong rival as the match unfolded.
On the other hand, Gigira Laitepo Souths walked the talk from their coaching staff to remain calm, yet were challenged to make sure their presence was felt on the field.
They made an early start to the scoreboard, with 2 from a penalty.
The pressure was on the Tarangaus as they crossed the tryline through prop junior Henry Levi.
Tarangau continued with Paul Jackson’s 90m dash to the try line, scoring right under the uprights and sending fans into a frenzy as they extended the lead to 10.
Tarangau put up a resilient boundary, making sure the Souths outfit stayed out of the goal area right up till halftime.
In the second half, Souths braved the spirited Tarangaus defence to register a try with a successful kick, taking it to 8.
Souths managed to clinch their second try to lead, but the boys from Bomana came from behind and scored a winning try at the 77th minute with 14 points to 12.
Meanwhile, Port Moresby Rugby League sympathizes on the passing away of Mr Segeyaro.
