“Micah Speaks Of Plans” – By Neville Choi

 

Minister for Public Enterprise and State Investments, and Member for Kavieng, Ben Micah, has announced that New Ireland has received the government’s approval for the establishment of a university for the province.

 

Speaking to EMTV’s Tok Piksa program, Mr Micah says the latest NEC endorsement for the university, is a vote of confidence in improving the future of education in New Ireland.

 

He says, the focus on education, health, and the well-being of New Irelanders, is captured in the New Ireland government’s Malagan Declaration.

 

Another, is the continuation of a rural electrification program initiated by his predecessor, Martin Aini.

 


 

“No Opposition Signs” – By Meredith Kuusa

 

Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion has welcomed comments by the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates, Mr Alphonse Gelu, relating to the dwindling numbers of Opposition Members of Parliament.

The Deputy Prime Minister said it was rare in the Westminster system to see so many Members wishing to be a part of the Government.

 

He sees it as an expression of confidence in the new direction of the nation.

Mr Dion also noted that public policy debate will continue to be robust with a very vocal Opposition Leader, and the overarching constitutional checks and balances provided through the separation of powers, as well as a free and strong news media.

 


“Victim Fights Back” – By Scott Waide

 

The family of a young woman who was the victim of a violent gang rape on Thursday night  – have fought back by assisting Lae police identify and apprehend seven  of the 10 men involved in the  assault.

 

In a series of raids at Lae’s Banana block, the suspects were identified and arrested.

 

The young woman was abducted from near her home in Lae’s town area in the early hours of Thursday morning, and raped by the men for several hours.

 

Her first attempt to escape was unsuccessful. Her attackers caught her and slashed her hand  with a bush knife. They then took her to another location where she was locked in a  house and assaulted again.

 

She finally escaped and alerted her relatives who laid a complaint with police.

 

It was later found that one of the main suspects was her neighbor.

 


“PMV Operator Concern” – By Quinton Alomp

 

A PMV operator has raised concerns about the way police are charging them and whether the money they’ve collected has been properly accounted for.

 

Route nine bus driver in NCD, Pora Kiap, said uniformed policemen from different departments takes the traffic’s department role and charged them, even taking money without giving back receipts.

 

He called on the authorities to clarify which police department and road safety authorities are responsible for charging fees and arresting PMV and taxi operators.

 


“AFL competition to Kick Off this Weekend” – By Skola Sengi

 

Port Moresby’s Premier AFL competition will kick off round sixteen, at the Taurama Barracks Ovals this weekend.

 

While Colts Ground and Amini Park, have housed Port Moresby’s AFL and Cricket competition, construction work has begun for the 2015 Pacific Games.

 

Taurama Barracks will now play host to all AFL matches in Port Moresby for the rest of the 2014 season.

 

To date, the Lloyd Robson Oval, Rita Flynn Courts, Bisini Softball Diamonds, Monier Rugby Park, Amini Park, and Colts Ground along the Bisini Parade are currently closed for reconstruction work to be carried out.
