PNG Women’s Cricket Team to Ruffle Feathers come Pacific Games

by Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

The Cook Islands Women’s Cricket Team and Pacific MMI Papua New Guinea Lewas are both ready to leave a lasting mark on the 2015 Pacific Games.

The Cook Islanders, though an amateur side, have the potential to perform well during the week long women’s cricket competition in the Pacific Games.

The Lewas may face stiff competition from Cook Islands, but Coach Rodney Maha said he was very confident that the team is geared up to face other national women’s teams next month.

Lewas Captain Pauke Siaka is confident of leading the inaugural PNG women’s cricket team to success during the games.

The team is focused on maintaining their winning streak in the Pacific Games having been crowned champions in the East Asia-Pacific region after winning the International Cricket Council’s East Asia-Pacific Trophy in Japan last year.

The women’s competition will also be used as part of the qualifying process for the 2018 Women’s World T20, which means that the top two EAP teams will qualify for a tri-series against Japan next year.

The Pacific Games women’s cricket kicks off in Port Moresby on Monday, 6 July with Papua New Guinea to play the first match against Vanuatu at 10am. Their second match is at 2pm against Cook Islands, with live scoring for every match available through the EAP website and EMTV Online.
