POM AFL Set For Season Proper

by Skola Sengi – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

The Port Moresby AFL Premiership is set to kick off next Saturday.

Taurama Suns and Lamana Dockers are anticipated to dominate the season, with favourites University Tigers in the Men’s Division.

University Tigers are also confident of retaining a third title in the Women’s Division.

The Port Moresby AFL competition wrapped up its three-round pre-season last weekend.

There were ten Men’s teams and six Women’s teams that took to the pitch to participate.

With Bisini still under construction for the Pacific Games, AFL was forced to find an alternative venue to conduct its annual season.

AFL PNG was able to secure the Murray Barracks Oval for its Junior competition, Taurama Barracks for its Secondary School competition and the University of Papua New Guinea Oval for its senior competition.

In the Men’s Division, under dogs Gulf Giants and Central Bombers will be the teams to look out for come season proper.

The Women’s competition is into its third year, and rivalry has been high.

University Tigers retained their title for a second year after beating Taurama Suns in last year’s grand final, and both teams are deemed as favourites for this year’s season.

Season proper for the Secondary Schools and Senior competition is now set to kick-off on May 9.
