In celebration of International Girls in Information communication technology (ICT) day, The National Information & Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) in conjunction with the objective of International GICT Day, planned to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day this year by way of an ‘Open Day’ where students from Caritas Technical Secondary School visited EM TV yesterday and many other companies where ICT and related units are overseen or managed by women.
Allowing these young school girls to be encouraged and motivated to pursue careers in ICT or related career paths.
The tour at the nationwide broadcaster EMTV gave a chance for the girls to meet up with other women and men in ICT at EMTV who gave them advice and motivation to take up ICT. Also, giving them a chance to visit the important department at EMTV’s Headquarters.
According to the European Commission, the importance of ICTs lies less in the technology itself than in its ability to create greater access to information and communication in underserved populations.
Also that the number of young people, in particular girls and women, studying and choosing careers in ICT is decreasing and not keeping up with growing demand for highly skilled ICT professionals.
Andirauga Paru Nongkas, Principal Consumer Analyst with NICTA, said that there is an uptake and use of ICT in today’s society and that there is a huge job opportunity for girls in ICT especially in a developing nation like PNG.
