NAQIA Boss Adamant to Complete Investigation

by: Mickey Kavera-EMTV, Port Moresby

Investigations into the failed housing projects for National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority, or NAQIA, are continuing and are at an advanced stage.

Acting Managing Director for NAQIA, Joel Alu, says police from the Fraud and Anti-Corruption Director are establishing forensic photographic evidences from various sources to piece togather the details.

The investigation was referred to the fraud and anti–corruption directorate after NAQIA ceased all its independent investigation last year.

Though it may take longer for the investigation to be completed, Alu is confident it will be done.

The housing project is the first for NAQIA costing K2.7million which was approved by the NAQIA Board in 2011.

The project was to be completed within a timeframe of six months. However, this never eventuated, prompting calls for the investigations.

The initial plan was to build nine three bed houses, but the plan was not followed by the contractors, with most of the materials imported from outside.

Alu wants to complete what has been left undone and is banking on the results of the investigations to settle the whole saga surrounding the failed housing scheme.

Meanwhile, terminated staff of NAQIA have also raised allegations against the Acting Managing Director.

David Kandiu, who was reportedly terminated based on his abusive conduct towards other staff, was terminated by NAQIA. Mr Kandiu alleged that Mr. Alu is promoting nepotism and has misused funds belonging to NAQIA by going on unapproved trips.

However, Mr. Alu denied all the allegations labelling it as misleading.
