Five Policemen in Wewak Behind Bars

Five policemen in Wewak, East Sepik Province have been charged and are now behind bars at the Boram Prison, for assault, rape, unlawful wounding and arson at Kawanumbo village.

 

The investigation police team from Port Moresby, led by Director Crimes, Chief Superintendent David Yamasobi, arrested the men.

The 6th policemen fled to his home province of Eastern Highlands before the investigation team arrived in Wewak.

 

Among them included the Wewak Police Station Commander, Inspector Sakawar Kasieng.

 

Wewak Police Station Commander, Inspector Sakawar Kasieng was among 4 other officers, who were charged and put behind bars at Boram on Monday, following an investigation by the Crimes Division team from Port Moresby.

 

Inspector Kasieng and 4 others were charged with one count of sexual penetration, 2 counts of arson, and 1 count of wounding.

 

The 6th policeman is believed to have flown to his home province Eastern Highlands before the investigation team arrived in Wewak.

 

He is Constable Pero Hetacks, and is also wanted for the rape of the 18 year old during the Kawanumbo village raid.

 

The investigation police team from the Crimes Division in Port Moresby apprehended the men on Monday.

 

They were then escorted under heavy police guard, to the Boram Prison, were they were locked up under the Court Remand Warrant.

 

They will now await their court appearances.

 

Last week, at a hand over parade at the Wewak Provincial Headquarters, the newly appointed police station commander for Wewak, Inspector James Baugen, urged his policemen and women to stay focused and committed to their job, and abide by the police code of ethics, and the Police Force Act.

 

Meanwhile, the police investigation team also raided a village in the Kaindi area and recovered stolen property, including a pair of police mobile uniforms.

 

They also recovered a laptop and a solar panel.

 

Three suspects have been arrested, and 1 of the suspects is a member of the auxiliary police, commonly referred by the people as the ID 24 Unit.
