Fifteen Students Off to Fiji for Tourism Studies

Fifteen students in Papua New Guinea have been awarded with scholarships to undertake tourism studies in Fiji.

This comes after the Papua New Guinea and Fiji Government signed a bilateral agreement in 2012 highlighting the need to grow the tourism industry in the Pacific.

A small ceremony was held yesterday to farewell the students.

The 15 students gathered at the Tourism Arts and Culture office in Port Moresby’s downtown yesterday to receive their scholarships and tickets.

The arrangement is a result of a promise, offered to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill by Commodore Frank Bainimarama in November 2012 when Mr O’Neill visited Fiji.

Fiji High Commissioner to PNG Romanu Tikotikoca told the scholarship recipients that Fiji is happy to assist PNG develop its tourism sector.

He says, Fiji is known worldwide for its tourism and the students will learn a lot from the studies.

Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Boka Kondra said the department will continue and strengthen this investment as tourism is a sleeping giant in PNG.

The students will study in the areas of cookery, bakery, restaurant services, housekeeping and office operation.

The students left for Fiji early this morning.
