An independent investigation is currently underway at the Basamuk refinery in Madang. The investigation is carried out by the government to assess debris found on the seashores a month ago.
Environment and Conservation Minister, John Pundari, said until the investigation is completed they will not release any information.
Minister Pundari said concerns raised by the local people at the Basamuk refinery in Madang, about the discovery of debris, dead fish and crabs on their seashores, will soon be made known.
He said a team is currently collecting samples from the debris and dead fish to test if the chemical components are same to that of the mine’s slurry.
Minister Pundari said the Deep Sea Tailing Placement system used by Ramu NiCO company, was approved by the government, and they do provide environmental reports to the government.
Meanwhile, the Company has carried out its own scientific analysis from its Basamuk laboratory and ruled out that the cause of the dead fish and crabs on the seashore were not related to the mine’s activity.
