International Day of Sport for Development

Today is the International Day of Sport for Development.

Sport has been used in many countries as a tool to raise awareness on important issues

Papua New Guinea also has some testimonies like its autonomous region, using sport as a unifying factor following the civil war on the island of Bougainville.

In commemorating the International Day of Sport and Development for Peace, the United Nation’s Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, says “sport is a driving force for positive social change.” 

The United Nation’s through sport, led by some of the worlds’ greatest personalities, have been leading awareness on important issues such as HIV/Aids and gender equality.

“A major new challenge embarked on, is implementing the visionary 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Sport has an essential role to play because it empowers, inspires and unit’s,” the Secretary General said.

In the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, sport has contributed significantly to peace building, which has been attributed to many big sporting events.

Sport has been described as a unique and powerful tool for promoting dignity and equality.

The United Nations has called on the government and individuals to harness the values and power of sport because it’supports the achievemen’s of the Sustainable Development Goals. 

By working and playing together, we can create the future we want.
