As part of International Women’s Day celebrations, the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) organised the women of Hula village in Central province to play rugby sevens as curtain raisersfor the rugby league nines tournament held over the Easter weekend.
During previous visits the PNGRFU Development Department were able to conduct clinics and Get Into Rugby sessions, which included tag rugby for children and adults to familiarise themselves with the basic skills of the game.
Prior to the curtain raiser match, the women had already been training under the supervision of village volunteer, Karo Vui, who was helpful in terms of organising the players training sessions and getting approval for the game to be played during the rugby league nines tournament.
Given the limited time to learn and train, the women’showed a lot of courage and determination to play.
This also exposed to the other women in the village that rugby is not played only by men, but also women, who should be treated equally when it comes to playing sports.
